La trama di Truth è basata sul libro "Truth and Duty: The Press, the President and the Privilege of Power", scritto dalla giornalista e produttrice televisiva Mary Mapes (interpretata da Cate Blanchett) che per anni ha lavorato alla trasmissione della CBS "60 minutes", al fianco del noto anchorman Dan Rather (Robert Redford). Il film narra le vicende che hanno portato al controverso caso, noto come "Rathergate", sui presunti favoritismi ricevuti da George W. Bush per andare alla Guardia Nazionale anziché in Vietnam. Una storia non confermata che, emersa nel 2004, a due mesi dalle elezioni presidenziali americane, ha poi provocato le dimissioni di Rather e il licenziamento di Mapes, portando tutta la CBS News ad un passo dal collasso.
